RE: Roads into Canaan Valley, WV

Doug, I'm sorry I missed your post. We are now at Canaan State Park and you're right, no water but easy get water at the laundry. We've had snow and it is pretty cold. We decided to go straight to Smokies and not do the Kentucky and Nashville part of the trip. Any hints abuot the roads going east from here?

Roads into Canaan Valley, WV

We just researched past posts and think we have our routes planned thanks to great advice from youall. Coming from NJ to Canaan Valley we will take I-68 west to 219, go south to Thomas, WV. From Canaan Valley we will probably go west to Kentucky. Judging from the warnings, we will go south on 32 then west on 33 to I-79 South and on to I-64 west. Does this sound like a good route? Any risk of snow or ice during the day?
Thanks so much!

RE: Scones

Leo, Thank you. Your recipe sounds perfect. I love to use buttermilk in bakegoods. It makes breads so fluffy and light. Will try it this week.
thanks again

Faux clotted cream

Just thought I'd let you know that the two clotted cream recipes from youall were both excellent. However, now it seems I need a better recipe for scones. Anyone willing to share?
Thanks

RE: clotted cream

Thanks for all the info. I will try W&S but will certainly make Teri's recipe. It sounds really good. Love Alton Brown but I must have missed that show. Clotted cream is a British spread for scones similiar to butter but so much better. The name put me off for a while but it's like a rich stiff whipped cream.
Thanks everyone.

clotted cream

Does anyone have a recipe for clotted cream? The ones I've found call for cooking cream and milk on low for hours- not what I had in mind. I thought maybe whipping whipping cream until nearly butter. Any thoughts?
Thank you

RE: Elevation questions

You have only a couple years on us and we did Fishing Bridge and all of Yellowstone with no problems. We stayed at Fishing Bridge and while a lot of people say it's too crowded and close, we liked it because it is in the park and centrally located. It takes a while to get from on area to another in Yellowstone so we think it is the most convenient campground; also lots of wildlife wander around in and very near the campground.
Have a great and fun trip!

RE: patagonia/senoita

Ditto, AZ Guide. We were there 2 weeks ago and the federal and state lands have signs posted warning about smuggling and illegal activity in the area and to use caution and dont' get too remote alone.

RE: Interstate 10

We were just on I-10 from Benson, AZ to Balmorhea, TX and it was fine. A bit windy and dusty but the road was good.

RE: Best Place to cross Mississippi River?

Thanks again all. The choices are limited what with snow up North and rain in the South. Sounds like a few of you are getting antsy to get on the road; yes, a bridge is our first choice. :S

Hi, Nascar,
we are only half as nuts. We're going for only 4-5 weeks and going only as far as Arizona and back. :@

Best Place to cross Mississippi River?

In about 3 days we will be coming from south Jersey going to Amarillo,Texas which is on I-40. The weather channel and news makes us think twice about where to cross the Mississippi. Hubby says Menphis on Rt 40 but forum members have said how bad I-40 is in Tenn and Arkansas. Forecasts mention bad storms through the midwest so St Louis, MO and through OKA might not be so good either. Any one have first hand knowledge on this area? Seems like we often encounter strong storms this time of the year in this area so we should know better.:?
Thanks for any advise

RE: Bangor maine to Houston Texas

We did that trip last fall and took 95 South to 495 around Boston area through Lawrence, Mass. Then we went West on 90 to 84 all the way through Conn. and PA. We picked up I-81 in the Scranton area.
It was a little out of the way but we avoided all the big cities. When you get to 81, it is easy going. It's a very :(long trip to Houston from there. We left from Bar Harbor. Hope you have a safe and fun trip

RE: Rio Grande Raft Tours -- recommendations?

I don't remember the name of the one we used but it was great fun. He fed us a little picnic on the Mexico side (7 yrs ago). We saw cougar tracks in the mud and saw wild donkeys on the hill sides. If you would like, I will dig up my old slides and get the name.

AGBAT, Thanks for the info on temps. I had wondered about that. The cats never leave the RV so will be safe; however, we will keep an eye out. BTW, snakes don't bother me but are there big spiders?

Thanks to everyone for the great advice. Especially the bit about the very cool evenings. April probably is a bit early in the season but that's when the hummingbirds come through.

Cochise County, AZ

We are getting a little tired of the wet cold Northeast and are planning to be in Cochise County, AZ by April 20. Is this the peak time of tourists and the birding crowd? Will we need to be quick in finalizing our reservations? We want to explore Ramsey Canyon, Ft Huachuca, Ash,Carr and Miller Canyons, Chiricahua Mts, Kartchner Caverns, Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve, San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, and a few wineries.:B Shall we stay the whole time in the Sierra Vista area and use the toad for day trips? Any recommendations for cg in the Sierra Vista area? We will have family visit for a week so will need a hotel for them as well.
Thank you for your help
Judy and Paul
